This course provides an in-depth understanding of human rights principles, mechanisms, and their practical application in various contexts.

COURSE OUTLINE:

WEEK 1: Introduction to Human Rights

  • Overview of human rights history and development
  • Key concepts and principles (universality, indivisibility, interdependence)

International Human Rights Law

  • UN Charter and human rights instruments (UDHR, ICCPR, ICESCR)
  • International human rights mechanisms (UNHRC, Special Rapporteurs)

Drafting workshop 1: DRAFTING OF HR PETITIONS

  • (i). Petition in Domestic Courts
  • (ii). Petition in Constitutional Courts

WEEK 2: Civil and Political Rights

  • Right to life, liberty, and security
  • Freedom of expression, assembly, and association
  • Right to fair trial and due process

Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights

  • Right to education, healthcare, and social security
  • Labor rights and trade unionism
  • Right to culture, language, and participation

Drafting Workshop 2: Writ Petitions

WEEK 3: Vulnerable Groups and Human Rights

Drafting Workshop 3: Appeals for Judicial Review

WEEK 4: Case studies and Discussions

  • Real-life examples of human rights violations and successes

  • Research paper or presentation on a selected human rights topic

Assessment and Certification

  • Weekly Drafting Tasks: Submission of weekly drafting assignments, which will be reviewed, and feedback will be provided.
  • Final Project: Completion of a comprehensive environmental legal document (e.g., a petition, agreement, or compliance report) based on a hypothetical scenario.
  • Certification: Participants who complete the course and successfully submit the final project will receive a certificate of completion.
